Musk Teases AI Chatbot 'Grok,' With Real-time Access To X
Read time: 2 minutes

Elon Musk revealed on Saturday the specifics of his latest AI tool, named "Grok," which has the ability to provide real-time access to X. Initially, it will be exclusively accessible to the top-tier subscribers of the social media platform.

Musk, the business magnate behind Tesla and SpaceX, emphasized that the collaboration with X, formerly known as Twitter, represents a significant advantage over other generative AI models.

Regarding Grok's sense of humor, Musk jokingly remarked, "Grok loves sarcasm. I have no idea who could have guided it this way," and he appended a laughing emoji to his post.

The name "Grok" is derived from "Stranger in a Strange Land," a science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein, signifying a profound and intuitive understanding of something.

"As soon as the Grok system is out of its early beta stage, it will become accessible to all X Premium+ subscribers," Musk announced.

Musk's acquisition of the social network approximately a year ago led to the recent launch of the Premium+ plan, priced at $16 per month and offering benefits such as an ad-free experience.

The billionaire entrepreneur initiated xAI in July and brought in researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.

Since the debut of OpenAI's generative AI tool, ChatGPT, one year ago, the technology has become a focal point of intense competition among tech giants like Microsoft, Google, as well as Meta, and startups such as Anthropic and Stability AI.

Musk stands out as one of the few investors globally with the resources required to compete with OpenAI, Google, or Meta in the field of AI. Developing an AI model on the same scale as these companies demands a substantial investment in computing power, infrastructure, and expertise.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 due to concerns about Google's aggressive moves in the sector, aiming to make significant strides and profits. However, he stepped away from OpenAI in 2018 to concentrate on Tesla, expressing discomfort with the profit-oriented direction the company was taking under CEO Sam Altman's leadership.

Additionally, Musk argues that OpenAI's large language models, upon which ChatGPT relies for content, are excessively politically correct.

Musk highlighted that Grok is designed to infuse humor into its responses and shared a screenshot of the interface where a user posed a questionable query. In response to a query on how to make cocaine, the chatbot offered a playful response, eventually steering the conversation to discourage such activities, emphasizing their illegal and dangerous nature.
